Survanta is used for the treatment of respiratory distress syndrom (RDS) in new born premature infants with a birth weight of 700g or greater. Survanta injection works by providing a substance called surfactant to the baby's lungs. which helps to  better lungs work by reducing the tension on the surfaces of the air sacs. It also helps keep the air sacs open and prevents them from collapsing during breathing,which makes it easier to breathe and improves their lung function. Some time serious side effects occures like Pale skin,Slow heartbeat,Breathing that stops,Urinating less than usual,Blood in the urine. Noisy breathing,Feeding or bowel problems, Bleeding around the endotracheal tube.
